🧭 Course Overview

This course focuses on designing effective and visually engaging Android app interfaces. Students will learn Android-specific UI patterns, user experience strategies, and how to design responsive layouts using Material Design principles. The course includes wireframing, prototyping, and developer handoff preparation.


🎯 Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Understand Android design systems, including Material Design

  • Create wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes

  • Design for multiple screen sizes and resolutions

  • Work with developer handoff tools and assets

  • Create a complete UI/UX design project for an Android app


🗂️ Weekly Breakdown

Module 1: Introduction to Android UI/UX Design (Week 1)

  • Overview of Android platform & ecosystem

  • Android vs iOS design philosophies

  • Importance of user-centered design

  • Roles: UI designer, UX researcher, Android developer


Module 2: Material Design Basics (Weeks 2–3)

  • Introduction to Google’s Material Design

  • Color, typography, icons, and shape systems

  • Elevation and shadows (material surfaces)

  • Components: App bars, FABs, buttons, cards, chips, bottom nav, drawers

Mini Project: Recreate a simple screen using Material components in Figma or XD


Module 3: User Research & App Structure (Week 4)

  • Understanding Android users

  • Creating personas and user flows

  • Structuring app content (activities/fragments)

  • Designing navigation: Tabs, drawers, bottom nav

Project: Flowchart + low-fidelity wireframes for a multi-screen Android app


Module 4: Designing in Figma / Adobe XD (Weeks 5–6)

  • Android screen dimensions & density (dp, sp, px)

  • Designing scalable layouts

  • Working with components and auto-layout in Figma

  • Prototyping interactions and transitions

Mini Project: High-fidelity mockups and clickable prototype for 3-5 screens


Module 5: Responsive Design for Android (Week 7)

  • Working with multiple screen sizes & aspect ratios

  • Responsive and adaptive layouts

  • Grid systems, padding/margin standards

  • Android resource folders (mdpi, hdpi, xhdpi)

Project: Redesign an existing Android app to work well on tablets and foldables


Module 6: Developer Handoff & Asset Export (Week 8)

  • Exporting assets from Figma/XD (SVG, PNG, 9-patch)

  • Creating style guides and design specs

  • Intro to Android Studio XML (UI layer only)

  • Collaboration with developers (Zeplin, Avocode, Figma Inspect)


Module 7: Accessibility & UX Testing (Week 9)

  • Color contrast, readable fonts, screen reader support

  • Touch targets and gesture design

  • Testing usability with tools like Maze, Lookback, or in-person

  • Creating test plans and feedback loops


Module 8: Final Project & Portfolio (Weeks 10–11)

  • Plan and design an original Android app

  • Research → Wireframes → UI Design → Prototyping

  • Present a complete case study with design rationale

  • Publish on Behance or portfolio website
